Wally Goodwin was named Director of Golf at UNC on April 15, 2003. In his role as Director of Golf, along with his responsibilities in recruiting and scheduling, Goodwin will be intricately involved in fundraising for the UNC golf program. He will work alongside Jack Maughan, who will continue as the head women's golf coach. Goodwin, 76, said he is looking forward to helping UNC advance its golf program from the Division II level to the Division I level. "I am tickled to death to come out of retirement and be in the situation to help the University of Northern Colorado and its golf program," Goodwin said. "I'm looking forward to helping golf at UNC. I'm also excited about the opportunity to provide any additional help to the University and athletic department beyond golf." Director of Athletics Jim Fallis said the hiring of Goodwin gives the UNC golf program a promising future at the Division I level. "I am ecstatic to have an individual of Wally's calibre joining our program," Director of Athletics Jim Fallis said. "His hiring will provide a unique opportunity to enhance golf as we move to Division I." Goodwin, 76, comes to UNC after a retirement from Stanford University, where he was the men's golf coach from 1987-2000. He was named the NCAA National Coach of the Year in 1994 and Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1995. He led Stanford to the NCAA team title in 1994 and Pac-10 titles in 1992 and 1994. From 1994-1999, Stanford had 21 tournament wins, 10 runner-up finishes and seven third-places. Goodwin coached Tiger Woods, Notah Begay III and Casey Martin, who all earned All-America honors under Goodwin's tutelage. Prior to his time at Stanford, Goodwin served as the golf coach at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He was inducted into the Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000. Goodwin coached the Wildcats from 1981-87. Goodwin also served as an assistant basketball coach at Stetson University in DeLand, Fla., from 1978-81. Goodwin has ties that date back to Greeley when he attended UNC (then Colorado State College) from the fall of 1947 to the spring of 1949. He finished his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia in 1951. Wally and his wife Nancy live on their family ranch in Wyoming.
